About the Artist & Style :
Devi Rani Dasgupta is a young professional, Indian, expressionist painter born on 22nd Oct 1983 in a joint family, at a small town at Bapudham Motihari, East Champaran district in north Bihar near India Nepal border. She had a knack for paintings since her childhood. In her younger days at the tender age of three, when her other cousins used to play she enjoyed drawing on the huge verandas of her house with a chalk. Seeing her basic talent, her parents imparted some basic training on fine arts and music to her, by appointing teachers. After that, she learned painting from many renowned artists of Bihar, U.P and Kolkata. In her childhood, she participated in a number of drawing competition organized by Rotary Club, Sports Club, Bihar Police, Red Cross Society, Kisan Vikas Samity etc and won many awards. She graduated in Zoology from B.B.R. Ambedkar University in the year 2004. She was highly influenced by the beauty of the famous Folk arts of Bihar, also known as Madhubani painting. She had a dream to become a painter since her childhood. She started experimenting with lines of popular Madhubani painting of her native place. She captured the beauty of Madhubani folk painting and fuses the minimal brush strokes and recombined them with those of her own. She has done quite a few paintings and mastered in this art. She likes to work on both figurative, human expression based compositions and landscapes using her unique style. She applies rich and bright colours in different layers completing it by applying bold strokes and textures. She uses designs in her composition both in subject and background which gives it a royal appearance and traditional elegance. Her different series on landscapes, Mother & Child, Radha & Krishna, King & Queen and male & female, animals were painted simply using two dimensional form with flat color application, with very few shade & light effect and an emphasis of the fine lines. She has done her seven solo shows and a number of group shows, annual shows, art fairs and art workshops & seminars in India and abroad. She has received several awards and has achieved much critical acclaim, popularity & appreciation over the past few years. Her art works can be found in numerous private and public collectors in India & abroad. The artist currently lives and works from Kolkata.
